If your weekend plans involve a couch, the streaming services have you covered. The days before Halloween brought one of the busiest release weeks of the fall, with returning hits, a high-profile remake, and one of the season's most talked-about new series all competing for attention. Here is what is new and notable, and where to find it.
The biggest binge drop belongs to Prime Video, where The Terminal List returned on October 21 with its second season, releasing all eight episodes at once. Chris Pratt is back as Navy SEAL James Reece in a season based on True Believer, the second novel in Jack Carr's book series. This time Reece, searching for purpose after completing his list, is cornered by the CIA and must clear his name while stopping a resurgent al-Qaeda, in a conspiracy the show says reaches from Moscow to Langley and into his own family's history.
On Netflix, the third season of Nobody Wants This reunites Kristen Bell and Adam Brody in the romantic comedy about the unlikely relationship between an agnostic podcaster and a Jewish rabbi, a pairing that turned the show into one of the platform's most reliable comfort watches. Hulu, meanwhile, has the week's buzziest debut in Phony, a surreal mystery created by Nick Paley. Sam Nivola plays a teenager who wakes up after a car accident convinced that his mother, played by Connie Britton, has been replaced by an impostor. The series premiered October 20 to strong reviews and is releasing episodes weekly on Tuesdays through December 1.
Movie options are plentiful too. The live-action Moana has arrived on Disney+, with newcomer Catherine Laga'aia in the title role alongside Dwayne Johnson, returning from the animated original. On HBO Max, The Invite, a relationship comedy directed by and starring Olivia Wilde with Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, and Penélope Cruz, has begun drawing awards-season attention. Horror fans, meanwhile, can rent Fresh Meat, an anthology film from the popular Dead Meat channel featuring 13 original shorts chosen from more than 550 submissions, released just in time for Halloween week. Also new to rent or buy this week are By Any Means, a historical thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as a real-life mafia hitman who became an FBI informant, and The Weight, starring Ethan Hawke.
If you would rather leave the house, theaters have new options as well. Clayface, a body-horror thriller built around the shape-shifting DC Comics villain, is now in cinemas, giving Halloween-season audiences a comic-book film with a decidedly grown-up edge. For something quieter, Klara and the Sun adapts Kazuo Ishiguro's novel into a science-fiction drama starring Jenna Ortega as an android companion designed to keep a lonely child company, a premise that has made the book a book-club favorite and the film one of the fall's more intriguing literary adaptations.
With so much landing at once, the weekend's problem is choice rather than scarcity. Action viewers have a full season of The Terminal List to burn through, comedy fans can check back in with Nobody Wants This, and families get a fresh Moana. However you split it, the platforms have made sure the last weekend of October is a strong one for staying in.
